CAS No.:

Chlorine is a pure, amber liquid about 1.5 times heavier than water. Gas chlorine is greenish-yellow in colour. It is approximately 2.5 times heavier than air, which causes it initially to remain close to the ground in places with little air movement. Chlorine has a pungent odour and is a strong oxidizing agent.

Chlorine, on an industrial scale, is produced in the process of electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, in a primary version it is produced in gaseous form. Sodium hydroxide and hydrogen are also obtained in this method. In the condensation process it is introduced into various sizes of pressurised packaging.

Chlorine is the main building block for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. At the largest scale it is used for the production of PVC and aluminum etching. Chlorine is also known as a disinfectant in drinking water and in swimming pools. Chlorine is also used in areas like disinfection, medicine, public safety, and improving our daily lives.

Chlorinated solvents are used as an extractive medium, in pharmaceutical processes, printing, mining and plastics, in the manufacture of glue and in paints and coatings. Chlorine compounds have been used in pharmaceutical preparations for many years and play a role in fighting infections and illness. Chlorine is applied not only in antiseptics but also in medicines such as chloramphenicol.

The product is loaded into cylinders (65 kg), pressurised drums (500-1000 kg) and in railway cisterns.

Properties and applications:

Chlorine and its compounds have a very wide application:

  • for bleaching in the paper and textile industries,
  • for the disinfection of urban water resources, domestic bleaching and bactericides,
  • for the production of many organic and inorganic chemical substances,
  • separation of metals such as copper, lead, zinc, nickel, and gold from ores,
  • VMC and PVC production - the main quantitative component in the synthesis process (about 56%),
  • in chemical synthesis in the agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.
